As a relentless heat wave advances, the Midwest and Northeast are gearing up for potentially the hottest weather in three decades. The heatwave is fueled by an unrelenting “heat dome”, which occurs when a persistent region of high-pressure traps heat over a particular area, and it can linger for days to weeks. With temperatures soaring, health officials are emphasizing the need for additional precautions, noting that extreme heat poses significant health risks. According to the NWS, heat ranks as the number one weather-related killer in the U.S.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the NWS has issued a Heat Advisory for southeastern Pennsylvania, effective until 6 AM EDT Thursday, and an Excessive Heat Watch from Thursday morning through Sunday evening. Forecasters are predicting record high temperatures in the region from Tuesday to Sunday.

Here are some important reminders and recommendations:

  • Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
  • Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
  • Take extra precautions when outside → Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.

Power outages could occur due to a prolonged period of heat. Residents can check Pennsylvania 211 for an extensive list of cooling centers across the state.
